Holly, the main character in the novel, was jealous of her two best friends, John and Sharon. They grew up together and had been friends for a really long time, so what made Holly jealous of them? It was the fact that they were expecting a baby soon. “Tears filled her eyes as she went over to congratulate Sharon and John” (Ahern 264). These tears were not happy tears however. Holly wanted a family very badly and the thought that her best friends were able to have a family hurt her. Her and Gerry were going to have a family but now that he was gone, that was not going to happen. After Holly kept to herself for a few weeks and did not talk to them, she got over her sadness and she realized that no matter what, she needed her friends. John was actually the one to get Holly to start to talk to Sharon because he knew it was hurting his wife not talking to Holly. “She misses you, you know” (Ahern 308). Holly went to the hospital with him to pick up Sharon from her check-up and Holly and Sharon made up like there was nothing wrong. Holly felt bad for ignoring Sharon at a time when she needed her best friend, but maybe it turned out for the better. While Holly took time for herself, she learned things. “…and Holly learned how to finally be able to talk about her husband” (Ahern 315). Although Holly shut Sharon and John out of her life for a little bit due to jealousy of them having a baby, she did not let it affect their relationship. She realized that there was no reason for her to be jealous and that she should be happy for Sharon and John. Sharon and John cared a lot for Holly and Gerry. “…Sharon and John were expecting a baby boy and they were planning on calling him Gerry” (Ahern 446). This made Holly very happy and appreciative of her friends.

Holly was going through so much through the story, which in return made her jealous of her two best friends, John and Sharon. Holly had been suffering from the loss of her husband, and her friends were also very close with her. “Sharon and John were managing to achieve everything that everyone though Holly and Gerry would do first” (Ahern 284). Holly was so upset that Sharon was having a baby and they were able to live the rest of their lives together, unlike her and Gerry because he was gone. Holly was so upset that her life had been turned upside down and that the lives her John and Sharon were changed, but that they still had each other. “So damn Sharon and Denise, they could go on with their happy lives, but for the next few months al Holly had was Gerry” (Ahern 269). Holly was upset because her friends were still able to have a good time and do things like that had before Gerry was gone, but she had to restart her life all over again, and all she wanted was her life back, and she would never have it back the way it was. She was jealous that her life plans were now going to be seen in the lives of other people, and that everything she had ever wanted was not going to happen, but that Sharon, someone who didn’t even like children, was going to have a baby with the man she loved, and Holly really wanted that for herself.
