When the novel, P.S. I Love You, starts off, Gerry has already passed away. The author, Cecelia Ahern does not give the audience a chance to get to know Gerry so the reader has to make assumptions on his character. Some common assumptions that are made probably deal with his kind, caring and loving character. It is obvious that he loved Holly very much because he made time to write her the ten letters while he was on his death bed. For one of the letters, he even planned a whole vacation for her and her friends. “Gerry has arranged a holiday for you and a Sharon McCarthy and a Denise Hennessey…” (Ahern 200). Gerry wanted Holly to have fun with her friends and to still live after he left so he went through the troubles of planning them a vacation. Gerry was a very sweet man, which probably had some effect on John and Sharon’s baby boy being named after him. “…Sharon and John were expecting a baby boy and they were planning on calling him Gerry” (Ahern 446). This was a very sweet thing for Sharon and John to do, but they did it because while Gerry was alive, he cared about them a lot too. They were pretty upset about his death as well, but tried to stay strong for Holly’s sake and helped her get through it. “This time only three of them gathered to remember the one they lost. And with all their talk, he became alive for them all that night” (Ahern 315). Another person that was affected by Gerry’s death was her brother Jack. Just like Sharon and John, he tried to act strong for Holly but eventually he lost it. After he helped her pack up Gerry’s belongings, he started to ignore Holly and Holly did not understand why. “Getting rid of his things just tore me up, being in the house and him not being there just… got to me” (Ahern 450). Although it seems like the death of Gerry is overwhelming to Holly and only Holly, many other people were effected by his death as well.
The death of Gerry made many people who were in his life upset and destroyed by the fact that a very good man was gone. His wife, Holly was very torn apart and felt as though her life was no longer worth living, because she believed that everything she lived for was for him and that her purpose in life was to be his wife and the two of them live happily ever after. However, even though Holly was torn apart, her two best friends, John and Sharon were hurt just as much, even though they didn’t show it. “’You seem to have forgotten how to do that. Look, I know that it’s difficult for you because I know its difficult for me. I miss Gerry too’” (Ahern 308). John had been best friends with Gerry since they were little and the fact that Gerry was gone really hurt John. However, he knew the pain and suffering that Holly was going through so he tried not to put the attention on his suffering. Even though he missed him too. Holly’s family was also affected because she needed them to make her feel better. Her family was the only thing she had to lean on, because her rock, Gerry was gone. “This time, only three of them gathered to remember the one they lost. And with all their talk, he became alive for them all that night” (Ahern 315). Gerry affected everyone who was in his life and all the time that he was gone made people realize how much they really needed him. He affected the outlook on life that his friends had and he affected the way in which the people he loved would live their lives from this day forward. He was a man of great significance to a lot of people. And without him, many people felt incomplete.
