After Gerry’s death, Holly was a mess. She swore Gerry was going to come back to her, when in reality that was not possible. When Holly’s friends and family got her to go out, she met a man named Daniel. He was a nice man and he was good looking. He just recently went through a bad break-up so he was in pain like Holly was. Daniel was very kind and caring for Holly, but Holly would not let him in. They had fun together, but Daniel liked her as more than just a friend. When he finally decided to tell her how he really felt, she freaked out. “No Daniel, this isn’t right” (Ahern 433). Daniel tried to convince her that it was okay but it did not work. “Too soon because that’s what people have been telling you, or too soon because that’s what your heart’s telling you?” (Ahern 433). Daniel knew all about Gerry and his letters so he knew that Holly was letting the letters control her life. She only did what Gerry told her to do in the letter, and this upset Daniel. “This is Gerry! This is what I’m competing with! It’s a piece of paper, Holly” (Ahern 434). After all the letters ran out, Holly realized what Daniel was trying to tell her. She missed Gerry so much that a piece of paper that he wrote was controlling her life. Holly was not allowing Daniel in and not allowing herself to develop feelings for him because the letters did not tell her to. When the letters finally did tell her to move on, it was a little bit to late for Holly.
Holly was so upset after the loss of Gerry. She was unable to allow herself to change her life in anyway because that made her so worried that he was really gone, and that was not something she was ready for. She was also not happy with the fact of bringing another man into her life so close to the death of her husband. Holly meets Daniel, the owner of a local pub and instantly she is attracted to him. He is charming, friendly, gorgeous, and a nice guy to be around. She finds herself attracted to him in a way she hasn’t felt since she met Gerry. And this fact scares her. The whole time she is grieving the death of her husband, Daniel tries to get close to her, but Holly wants nothing of it. “Everything was about him. She had truly believed that her purpose in life had been to meet Gerry and enjoy all their days together for the rest of their lives” (Ahern 254). Holly was so scared to get close to Daniel because she believed that her purpose in life was to be Gerry’s wife and that if she got close to him she would be breaking that purpose, and her life would no longer be what it once was. Also, Holly was afraid to get close to Daniel because she was afraid that that would id her of Gerry for good and that eventually his presence would be nothing, and he would truly be gone. She didn’t want to get rid of the feeling that he was still there, and having another man in her life made her feel as though she was doing just that. “And what a welcome she had been given, she thought, smiling down at the envelopes. Gerry was back” (Ahern 33). Holly finally had a piece of her husband back and it was the only thing that made her smile ever since he died. She was afraid that by keeping Daniel close to her, she would void Gerry’s presence and she would be betraying what her life was supposed to be, her and Gerry.
